As reported by WIRED, CIA Director John Brennan became the target of a hacker. His AOL account was breached by someone posing as a Verizon employee. This phishing attack deceived a worker into sharing key information.

The hacker managed to obtain the last four digits of Brennan’s bank card. With that detail, unauthorized access to Brennan’s account became possible.

The teenage hacker and his team then reset Brennan’s email password. They accessed his inbox, uncovering classified government documents. Brennan had forwarded these emails from his work account, a practice that significantly increases security risks.

According to WIRED:

By providing a fake employee Vcode, the hacker gained access to Brennan’s account details. These included his account number, four-digit PIN, backup mobile number, and AOL email address.

“After obtaining this information, we called AOL and claimed we were locked out,” the hacker explained. “They asked security questions. We had the answers from Verizon, so we reset the password.”

This case highlights how easily hackers can exploit weak security measures. Traditional security questions are no longer enough. Answers to questions like “What is your mother’s maiden name?” can be easily found or guessed.
